AI takes flight over Peru: 303 new Nazca geoglyphs discovered
According to a latest article, Daily Galaxy features that for over a century, the Nazca Lines in Peru have puzzled archaeologists. These vast geoglyphs, created by the Nazca civilization between 200 BC and 650 AD, showcase intricate images of animals, plants, and tools, visible only from the air. The purpose and meaning behind these mysterious formations have remained subjects of debate.
However, a groundbreaking collaboration between archaeologists and artificial intelligence (AI) has recently led to the discovery of 303 new geoglyphs in just six months, effectively doubling the previously known total. This AI-driven revelation has provided fresh insights into the purpose of the lines, offering new perspectives on one of archaeology’s most enduring mysteries. According to Science Focus, this discovery represents a major leap forward in understanding the Nazca civilization.
A team of researchers, led by Prof. Masato Sakai from Yamagata University’s Institute of Nazca in Peru, worked alongside IBM scientists to teach AI how to analyze vast amounts of aerial imagery, uncovering previously hidden geoglyphs. "The ability to conduct the [survey] in such a short period was thanks to the use of AI," Sakai explains. The AI-powered approach has dramatically accelerated the process, enabling faster surveys than traditional methods would allow.
AI’s potential extends beyond geoglyph discovery; it is transforming archaeological practices. By processing large datasets, AI identifies patterns and structures that might otherwise go unnoticed, offering a more efficient and precise means of mapping and interpreting ancient sites.
