Air travel disruption in Germany puts 20 million passengers at risk
10 May 2026 11:15
A shortage of aviation fuel in Germany could lead to flight cancellations as early as next summer, potentially affecting around 20 million passengers in the worst-case scenario.
The warning was issued by Ralph Beisel, CEO of the German Airports Association (ADV), in an interview with Welt am Sonntag.
“In the worst case, some airports could see a 10% reduction in capacity. Across all airports, this would affect 20 million air passengers,” Beisel said.
He added that on some routes, flights may be discontinued from Germany altogether, while on others services could become less frequent and more expensive. According to him, cancellations are expected to primarily affect certain routes operated by low-cost carriers.
