Alaska residents scramble to stock up on essentials as volcanic eruption looms

Residents in Alaska's largest city are bracing for a looming volcano eruption that scientists have warned could happen in a few weeks.

Anchorage is preparing for a potential eruption of Mount Spurr that is located about 130 kilometers from the city, Caliber.Az reports citing the Daily Mail.

Scientists predict that an eruption could occur in the coming weeks or months in the US state. Anchorage authorities have already raised the alert level, launching information campaigns and activating emergency response protocols. Residents are stocking up on protective gear—including masks, respirators, goggles, and even special boots for dogs. Local pet stores report a surge in demand for animal protection gear. One store owner said over 500 pairs of dog goggles were sold in March alone, and 1,800 respirators have already been pre-ordered.

The 3,300-meter volcano last erupted in 1992, blanketing the city in volcanic ash. A similar pattern is now emerging, with elevated seismic activity recorded in the area since April 2024.

Scientists have warned that volcanic ash poses a serious health hazard. It can irritate the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract, and it is particularly dangerous for individuals with asthma or heart conditions. City officials are advising residents to stock up on at least two weeks' worth of water and food, limit time outdoors, and use protective equipment when going outside.
