Algeria demands Israel ceasefire in Gaza
Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf has urged the international community to put pressure on the Israeli authorities to stop the "genocidal" war in the Gaza Strip.
He made the remarks in New York participating in the events within the framework of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
He drew attention to the “numerous crises, disputes and conflicts facing the UN and the UN Security Council, which in particular illustrate a tense, exceptional and unprecedented situation.”
“One of the main challenges facing the international community today is to force the Israeli colonial occupier to stop the genocidal war it has been waging for almost a year against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and to put an end to the multi-level Israeli escalation in the Middle East,” the foreign minister stressed.
Algeria is now a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council and in this capacity pays increased attention to the situation in the zone of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. The North African country has repeatedly strongly condemned the Israeli military actions in the Gaza Strip and expressed solidarity with the Palestinian people. Algeria is also involved in sending food aid to the people of Gaza.
On October 7, 2023, armed supporters of the Palestinian radical movement Hamas infiltrated from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory, killing residents of border communities and taking more than 240 hostages. In response, Israel launched a military operation in the enclave with the aim of destroying the Hamas military and political structure and releasing all those abducted. The fighting in the Gaza Strip continues to this day.
