Alternative for Germany support hits record 29% in polls

17 May 2026 12:26

A survey conducted by the INSA institute has shown that the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) has reached 29% — a record level of support in opinion polls — widening its lead over the governing CDU/CSU bloc.

This marks the highest figure the party has ever recorded at the national level, Caliber.Az reports, citing European Pravda.

The CDU/CSU bloc lost one point and fell to 22%, marking its worst INSA polling result in more than four years.

Its coalition partner, the Social Democratic Party (SPD), also saw a decline, dropping to 12%.

Together, the governing parties would secure only 34% of the vote, which would be insufficient for a parliamentary majority.

The Greens strengthened their position, rising to 14%, their best result in two and a half years.

The Left Party lost one point, falling to 10%.

Other polling institutes estimate AfD support at between 25% and 28%, while the conservatives are polling between 22% and 24%.

The INSA survey was conducted among 1,203 respondents, with a margin of error of ±2.9 percentage points.
