Ambassador: Indonesia may join BRICS
Jakarta's ambassador to Moscow Jose Antonio Morato Tavares has said that the Indonesian MPs are discussing the issue regarding Indonesia’s possible joining the BRICS (an informal group of states comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa).
“This topic is currently being discussed by various ministries,” the ambassador noted, Gazeta.ru reported on January 5.
“We are still considering the possibility of joining the BRICS. Discussions are held at the level of various ministries to consider all the pros and cons of participating in the BRICS. Then the government will make a decision,” Jose Antonio Morato Tavares added.
Three countries once applied to join the BRICS in 2022, namely, Algeria, Argentina and Iran. The organisation is expected to expand in 2023. Moreover, other countries also want to join the BRICS, in particular, Türkiye, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
