US Embassy: Americans in Iraq face kidnapping threat
The United States Embassy in Baghdad has warned American citizens in Iraq about a potential “risk of kidnapping” amid escalating tensions in the Middle East that threaten US interests throughout the region.
According to France 24, the warning was issued in a statement published on the embassy’s website on Thursday, March 12.
“Iran and Iran-aligned terrorist groups pose a serious threat to public safety in Iraq,” the embassy said.
The statement noted that “attacks have occurred against US citizens, American interests and critical infrastructure,” adding that “Americans are also at risk of kidnapping.”
The warning follows a decision by the United States last week to urge its citizens to leave Iraq after Washington, together with Israel, carried out strikes on Iran on February 28.
