"Americans love Denmark": US public backs Danes amid Greenland row
The Danish Embassy in Washington said it has received hundreds of letters, postcards, and phone calls from U.S. citizens expressing support following statements by President Donald Trump regarding Greenland.
The diplomatic mission said in a post on its Facebook page that Americans have emphasised the friendly relations between the two countries and expressed solidarity with Denmark, Caliber.Az reports.
“We’ve received hundreds of emails, cards and phone calls underscoring the friendship that binds our nations. We are not able to respond to every message but we take note of every single one!” the embassy said.
In addition, flowers and a handwritten note reading “Americans love Denmark” were found outside the embassy building.
Since returning to the White House in 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump has escalated his long standing interest in the Arctic island of Greenland, a semi autonomous territory of Denmark, raising diplomatic tensions with Copenhagen and allies. Trump argues that Greenland’s strategic location, potential natural resources, and proximity to Russia and China make it essential for U.S. national security. He has repeatedly suggested the United States should acquire or control Greenland “one way or another,” even hinting that anything less would be “unacceptable” and that NATO would be stronger with Greenland under U.S. control. Trump also didn’t rule out US military intervention for the takeover.
In response, Denmark’s government and Greenlandic leaders have firmly rejected any notion of selling or relinquishing the territory. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens‑Frederik Nielsen have stressed that Greenland is not for sale and that its defence should be conducted through NATO and existing alliances.
