Anti-Russian sanctions spark crisis in Japan's sushi industry
07 August 2022 21:36
Russia's response to Western sanctions has caused a crisis in the sushi industry in Japan.
The most common ingredients for Japanese dishes, salmon and caviar, have risen in price by 30 per cent: the average price per kg of imported salmon and trout from 2017 to 2021 was 1,595 yen (about $11), while in June it increased to 2,040 yen (more than $15), according to Yahoo News Japan.
The reason for the rise in prices was air travel: earlier the ingredients were purchased in Norway. By plane, they were delivered to Japan through the territory of Russia. However, due to the introduction by Russia of restrictions on the flights of foreign airlines in the country's airspace, such transportation has become impossible.
