"Any day now": Lukashenko announces arrival of Oreshnik missile system

26 January 2025 17:31

Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said that the Russian-made Oreshnik missile system will arrive in Belarus any day now.

He gave this statement while talking to reporters amid the presidential elections that are on their way throughout the country this weekend, Caliber.Az reports citing Belarusian media outlets.

He also said that one single Oreshnik complex would be enough to protect the whole of Belarus.

Lukashenko did point out that the possesion of nuclear weapons was primarily used for deterrence purposes, saying that it was "not to avoid getting wet under the nuclear 'rain', but to prevent this 'rain' from happening at all."

As Caliber.Az recalls, the novel Russian missile “Oreshnik,” a hypersonic missile equipped with multiple warheads has attracted significant attention after an attack on a Ukrainian factory in Dnipro in October 2024. Shortly after the strike, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the military had launched a "new conventional intermediate-range" missile with the codename Oreshnik. According to the Russian president, the weapon is capable of travelling at a speed of Mach 10, or 2.5-3km per second (10 times the speed of sound), warning that "there are currently no ways of counteracting this weapon".

The missile has the capability of carrying multiple warheads, has the potential to create a saturation effect. This means that several warheads can be fired at a target within a broad zone simultaneously.
