Argentina weighs defamation case linked to World Cup coverage

The Argentine Football Association is considering a broad legal action over an alleged disinformation campaign targeting its national team players during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to a report by La Nacion newspaper.

The proposed defamation lawsuit would focus on what the AFA describes as false critical claims, fabricated or unverified images, and baseless accusations circulated during the tournament.

The association is expected to target not only major media organisations and influential social media accounts, but also individuals and platforms that contributed to amplifying the alleged campaign, regardless of their audience size.

The development follows Argentina’s 1–0 defeat to Spain in the World Cup final. The match remained goalless after regular time, with the decisive goal scored in the second period of extra time by Ferran Torres, a 26-year-old forward for FC Barcelona.

Argentina were reduced to ten men in the 93rd minute after Enzo Fernández received a second yellow card for a heavy challenge on Pau Cubarsí while contesting possession. Fernández had earlier been booked in the 82nd minute for protesting to the referee and demanding a foul.
