Argentine Foreign Minister Gerardo Werthein resigns ahead of elections
Argentine Foreign Minister Gerardo Werthein has submitted his resignation to President Javier Milei, effective next Monday, according to senior officials confirmed to LA NACION.
Werthein’s departure comes amid tensions with presidential adviser Santiago Caputo, a key member of Milei’s inner circle known as the “iron triangle.” The Foreign Minister reportedly grew frustrated with attacks from Caputo’s digital team and the lack of public support from the President.
Sources indicate that Werthein also faced criticism over the failed bilateral meeting between Milei and U.S. President Donald Trump, in which Trump linked financial support for Argentina to a victory by Milei’s party in the upcoming elections.
Potential successors mentioned include Nahuel Sotelo, Secretary of Worship; Úrsula Basset, Director of Human Rights at the Foreign Ministry; Luis María Kreckler, Consul in São Paulo; Guillermo Francos; and Fulvio Pompeo, former Secretary of Strategic Affairs under Mauricio Macri.
Werthein, who took office in November 2024, had overseen Argentina’s alignment with the United States and Israel. His resignation marks a significant shake-up in the Milei administration ahead of the elections scheduled for Sunday.
