Armenia, US discuss security cooperation

17 June 2024 10:11

Armen Grigoryan, Secretary of Armenia's Security Council, recently met with US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan during his official visit to Switzerland on June 16.

Grigoryan highlighted the discussions on bilateral security cooperation, according to a statement posted on Facebook, Caliber.Az reports.

"We discussed Armenian-American cooperation in the field of security and addressed US support in enhancing Armenia's defense and security capabilities, as well as resilience," Grigoryan stated.

The meeting underscored the strategic dialogue between Armenia and the United States aimed at bolstering Armenia's security infrastructure. Grigoryan also emphasized the broader agenda covered during their talks.

The discussions come amidst speculation and analysis from various quarters. Russian political analyst Maksim Zharov suggested that recent moves by Yerevan within the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) framework could align with US strategic interests, potentially aimed at influencing Russia's regional alliances negatively.

Nikolai Mezhevich, Chief Researcher at the Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences, expressed concerns over Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's reliance on Western support for national security, cautioning against potential implications for regional stability.

Earlier calls from Russia to exclude Armenia from the CSTO underscore the geopolitical complexities surrounding Armenia's security alliances. The outcome of Grigoryan's discussions with Sullivan signals ongoing shifts in Armenia's foreign policy dynamics amidst regional security challenges.
