Armenian freight convoy halted as Upper Lars sees massive backlog
More than a thousand Armenian cargo trucks remain stuck at the Upper Lars checkpoint on the Russian-Georgian border in North Ossetia, Armenian media reported on August 6, citing updated figures.
According to the latest data, 2,889 trucks from various countries are currently queued at the border crossing, including 1,082 vehicles from Armenia.
The congestion stems from a surge in Russian tourists travelling to Georgia and Armenia, significantly slowing down border procedures. On certain days, crossing times have stretched up to 15 hours.
The Mtskheta–Stepantsminda–Lars international highway remains the only operational overland route connecting Armenia with Russia, making the bottleneck especially critical for Armenian trade and logistics.
