Armenian media: PM Pashinyan encourages police violence against revanchists

27 June 2024 12:08

The Yerevan-based newspaper Zhokhovurd has written a report claiming that Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan encourages police violence against revanchists.

“A few days ago, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan met with representatives of the police system and stated that he is by their side. Moreover, according to the information we have received, the head of the Cabinet of Ministers also personally gave a verbal instruction to the heads of the law enforcement agencies that no police officer would be arrested in any case,” the report reads, Caliber.Az reports.

“Pashinyan explained that if they go ahead with the arrests, they will thereby break the spirit of police officers, while they should not have their "wings" clipped.

It is because of this order that so far not a single police officer has been prosecuted for violence against members of the Movement (of Revanchists - ed.), which started back in April,” the material says.

Meanwhile, the Armenian Investigative Committee disclosed significant legal actions against citizens involved in the "Tavush for the Motherland" initiative, totalling 59 individuals facing criminal charges. Of these, 29 defendants have been subjected to preventive measures such as house arrest, travel bans, and educational supervision. Notably, no police officers have faced formal punishment despite these developments.

Of these 29 defendants, house arrest was chosen for 13 persons, absence ban - for 15, educational supervision - for 1 and administrative supervision - for 1. Seven criminal proceedings with indictments against 17 persons were sent to court."

However, not a single policeman will be punished at least formally," the newspaper said.
