Armenian PM's silence on return of Azerbaijani villages to lead to war Political scientist sounds alarm

12 March 2024 13:37

Armenian political scientist Suren Surenyants in an interview with Armenian media highlighted the issue relating to the return of Azerbaijani villages.

"I would like to point out several aspects of the statement by the UK Deputy Defense Secretary James Heappey. It says nothing real, it is also noteworthy that only the challenges coming from Russia are mentioned, nothing is said about the challenges coming from Türkiye, Azerbaijan. I have said many times that the West's main problem is to push Russia and Iran out, not to address Armenia's real security problems," Surenyants said, Caliber.Az reports.

"Can the British, for example, say how they will compensate for these economic losses if, for example, Upper Lars is closed, nuclear fuel for nuclear power plants is not provided and the like? Of course, they won't. I don't even see a mechanism for how they will solve these problems in terms of logistics.

In addition, it's very much a propaganda talking point, that is giving the government a bonus so that the government can say internally, look, there is someone who supports us. It's more of a propaganda backdrop than a message containing a reality that the government, pro-Western forces will constantly manipulate internally as an argument.

The EU candidate's thesis should also be considered. It consists again in the authorities creating an alibi for their policy. In reality, Armenia has no potential to achieve this level of European integration, i.e. to become a full member of the EU. Therefore, it is quite obvious that this statement is made in order to win the favor of our society, but there is nothing specific under it. It is not even clear what the EU will be like after this global confrontation: whether it will keep its unity, whether it will not, etc.

As for the statements of the Armenian authorities concerning the freezing of membership in the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), I have repeatedly said in interviews that in a turbulent world one cannot make sharp turns in foreign policy, it will lead to unpredictable consequences.

I should note that we were constantly told that if we moved the negotiations from the Russian platform to the Western platform, they would put pressure on Azerbaijan and the latter would not be aggressive. Now we see the exact opposite, Azerbaijan voiced this demand (return of 4 villages of Gazakh region - ed.) right after Berlin.

A very complicated situation has been created, we realize that Armenia has no resources to resist, because the West does nothing but statements, and secondly, I am afraid that Nikol Pashinyan, in order to absolve himself of responsibility, will not go to negotiations on this issue, bringing a critical moment, that again everything will be decided at the cost of Armenian soldiers' lives.

In other words, I am afraid that after this demand he will expect some miracles from the West, of course, they will not come true, and everything will end with the fact that we will lose territories and human lives, and maybe something else," Surenyants noted.
