Armenian pundit accuses opposition of seeking closer ties with Russia Risking nation's independence

22 April 2024 16:00

Armenian political scientist Eduard Atinian has made startling allegations against the opposition, claiming that their agenda includes surrendering Armenia to Russia.

In a recent interview with Armenian media, Atinian raised concerns about the opposition's stance on national security and territorial integrity, warning against the potential consequences of aligning too closely with Russia, Caliber.Az reports.

"Atinian pointed out the alarming statements made by opposition leaders, suggesting that joining Russia for Armenia's security could lead to compromising the nation's sovereignty".

"The problem here is that we have a problem with Russia, and the people who are fighting like this want the Russian troops not to leave, they want to cooperate more closely with Russia. However, in a union state, the big state will swallow you up and that's it," Atinian stated, expressing his apprehensions about the implications of deeper collaboration with Russia.

Atinian further criticized the opposition for its inconsistent stance on national independence, highlighting contradictions in their rhetoric. "If a member of parliament from this political force goes and says you give up a few meters, what do they propose? Let's not give up these few meters and give the whole Armenia to Russia?" he questioned, emphasizing the need for a clear and principled approach to safeguarding Armenia's interests.

The political scientist's remarks underscore the deep divisions within Armenian politics and the complexities surrounding the country's relationship with Russia. As Armenia grapples with internal strife and external pressures, debates over foreign policy and national security continue to shape the nation's future trajectory. Atinian's comments serve as a reminder of the importance of maintaining vigilance and upholding the principles of sovereignty and independence in the face of evolving geopolitical dynamics.
