As death toll mounts in Gaza strikes, US urging Israel to delay ground operation Saudis object to relocation of Gazans

14 October 2023 10:28

The United States has asked Israel to delay the start of a ground operation in the Gaza Strip until a safe corridor for the withdrawal of civilians is opened.

“Three sources with knowledge tell me the US has urged Israel to delay its ground operation in Gaza until safe passage for Palestinians can be secured – this is in line with previous messaging from the US, urging Israel to abide by the laws of armed conflict,” Fox News’ Jacqui Heinrich tweeted without specifying whether the Israeli government agreed to fulfill this request.

Jacqui Heinrich also noted that “I'm told the first charter flight has already departed the region – approximately 100 people evacuated. US officials believe interest in leaving may increase in the coming days - right now, there is initial planning for a cruise ship option.”

In the meantime, Riyadh considers the forced relocation of residents of the Gaza Strip due to intense Israeli shelling unacceptable, TASS reports, citing a statement of the Saudi Foreign Ministry.

“Saudi Arabia reiterates its categorical opposition to calls for the forced evacuation of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip and condemns the ongoing attacks against defenseless civilians,” the document states on the agency’s X page.

The ministry also called on the international community to take urgent action to lift the blockade of the Gaza Strip, ensure the safety of civilians, evacuate the wounded, and force parties to the conflict to comply with international humanitarian law.

Simultaneously, the victims of the war are on the rise as figures indicate.

At least 1,900 people have died due to Israeli strikes on the Gaza Strip since October 7, Israeli media reports with reference to Palestinian medical services, Caliber.Az says.

In addition, according to the data, almost 7,700 people were injured.
