At least five dead, dozens injured in firecracker factory blast in India VIDEO
At least five people were killed and 34 others injured in a powerful explosion that occurred shortly after midnight at a firecracker factory in the northern Indian state of Punjab.
The blast took place at a double-storey facility located in Singhwala village, near the town of Lambi in Muktsar district. The factory, owned by a man identified as Tarsem Singh, was completely destroyed in the explosion, with the force of the blast leveling the building and trapping workers under the debris, Caliber.Az reports, citing Indian media.
Rescue efforts have been underway since the early hours of May 30. Authorities report that five bodies have been recovered so far, and operations continue to ensure no one remains trapped. Most of the workers employed at the factory were migrant labourers from the eastern Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The identities of the deceased have not yet been confirmed.
“Three bodies were recovered during the night, and two more in the early morning hours. Based on the number of workers believed to be staying inside, we are hopeful that no one else is trapped, but the rescue operation continues as a precautionary measure,” Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Jaspal Singh said.
Thirty-four people have been hospitalized with injuries. Some are being treated at the Civil Hospital in nearby Badal, while others have been transferred to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Bathinda. All injured individuals are reported to be in stable condition.

Preliminary investigations suggest that both the manufacturing and packaging of firecrackers were taking place at the same site — a practice that may have contributed to the scale of the incident. Authorities also confirmed that several workers were residing within the factory premises at the time of the blast.
Muktsar’s Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Akhil Chaudhary, stated that two separate units — one for production and the other for packaging — were operating on the premises.
“Some workers were busy with packaging last night, while a few others were asleep when the blast occurred. Prima facie, it appears that the explosion was caused by materials used in firecracker manufacturing. However, our forensic team will conduct a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause. There is no need for panic at this stage,” he said.
Authorities have notified the regional factories department, and an official inspection will be conducted to investigate possible violations of safety protocols under India’s Factories Act.
