Australian PM: Strait of Hormuz must remain open
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has stated that the Strait of Hormuz must remain open to shipping, stressing that the United States has not asked Canberra to take part in any potential blockade of the waterway.
In an interview with Nine Network, Albanese noted that Australia has received no requests on the issue and is not involved in any such discussions.
He also underlined that Canberra supports continued negotiations and de-escalation of tensions, saying that Australia wants the Strait of Hormuz to remain open to all and supports freedom of navigation in accordance with international law.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump said that the US Navy could begin quickly blocking vessels entering or exiting the strait after ceasefire talks between the United States and Iran failed to reach an agreement.
