Axios: Iran may be offered truce in exchange for nuclear restrictions

24 May 2026 09:48

A draft US-Iran memorandum proposes that Washington would agree to engage in 60 days of ceasefire-based negotiations on the possible lifting of sanctions on Iran and the unfreezing of Iranian assets held in foreign banks, Axios reports, citing its sources.

According to the report, Iranian representatives had demanded an immediate release of frozen assets and the permanent lifting of sanctions, but the US side stated this would only occur after tangible concessions from Tehran.

The draft also includes a commitment from Iran to permanently abandon efforts to develop nuclear weapons, as well as to negotiate the suspension of uranium enrichment and the removal of highly enriched nuclear fuel from its territory.

In addition, the document addresses the cessation of hostilities between Israel and the Hezbollah movement in Lebanon. A US official noted that the American administration does not rule out the possibility that the ceasefire could collapse before the end of the 60-day period if the terms of the memorandum are not respected.
