Axios: Pentagon preparing “final blow” scenarios against Iran
The Pentagon is developing military options for a potential “final blow” against Iran, which could include the use of ground forces and large-scale bombing, Axios reported, citing sources familiar with internal discussions.
According to U.S. officials and insiders, four primary scenarios are under consideration for President Donald Trump:
-
An invasion or blockade of Kharg Island, Iran’s main oil export hub.
-
An operation targeting Larak Island, a strategic outpost used by Iran to reinforce control over the Strait of Hormuz, where military infrastructure, including bunkers, radar systems, and fast-attack boats, is located.
-
The seizure of the strategically important Abu Musa Island and two smaller nearby islands near the western entrance to the strait, currently controlled by Iran.
-
The interception or seizure of vessels exporting Iranian oil in the eastern part of the Strait of Hormuz.
U.S. military planners have also prepared options for ground operations deeper inside Iranian territory. However, sources say Washington is prepared to escalate if ongoing diplomatic efforts fail to produce tangible results in the near term.
At the same time, Pakistan, Egypt, and Türkiye are reportedly continuing efforts to facilitate talks between the United States and Iran. While Tehran has rejected an initial list of U.S. demands, it has not ruled out negotiations altogether.
“But mistrust is the problem. The commanders of the IRGC are very skeptical," the source said, referring to the powerful Iranian military force. "But the mediators haven't given up.”
