Nauru renames itself Republic of Naoero in identity push

31 July 2026 12:20

The Pacific island nation of Nauru, one of the world’s smallest states, has officially changed its name to the Republic of Naoero, authorities announced, in a move aimed at reinforcing national identity and cultural heritage.

The government said the renaming seeks to “preserve the heritage of our ancestors and strengthen the future of our children.”

With a population of about 12,000, the country has long been known locally as Naoero. The name “Nauru” was introduced during European contact, as colonial administrators found the indigenous name difficult to pronounce. It has been used in official records since 1888, when Germany annexed the island and incorporated it into its Marshall Islands protectorate.

Parliament approved a constitutional amendment in May to formalize the name change, initially planning to hold a nationwide referendum. However, President David Adeang said this week that the referendum had been canceled, expressing confidence that the population would support the shift.

“This is already the identity of the people, it is depicted on the national coat of arms and used in society, and, importantly, it is permitted by the constitution,” he said.

Authorities said the final stage involves formally notifying international organizations and foreign governments of the change, a process that is already underway.
