Borouge restores UAE petrochemical complex after drone attack

UAE petrochemicals producer Borouge has fully restored operations at its Ruwais complex following a drone attack in April, the company said in a statement.

"As reported on 6 April 2026, an incident at Borouge Plc's production facilities at the Ruwais complex resulted in a temporary suspension of operations in the affected areas. (...) The assets were fully restored by the end of June, although production has since been constrained by the availability of feedstock," the statement said.

According to Russian media, the company said it successfully shipped all products manufactured during the second quarter, as well as additional volumes from existing inventories. Total production at Borouge Plc's facilities reached 700,000 tonnes in the second quarter, while sales totalled 900,000 tonnes.

"Borouge successfully established alternative logistics routes by road, rail and sea, enabling shipments to exceed quarterly production while maintaining uninterrupted supplies to customers despite regional disruptions," the company said.

The company's average capacity utilisation stood at 60% during the second quarter. In addition to the April incident, the closure of the Strait of Hormuz disrupted export flows and forced feedstock suppliers to temporarily reduce production.

"In the second half of 2026, the recovery in operating rates will depend on the extent to which maritime traffic can move freely through the Strait of Hormuz. Borouge's production assets are fully prepared to ramp up output and sales quickly once feedstock becomes available. Average selling prices are expected to remain elevated in the short term, as are logistics costs," the company said.

Borouge suspended operations at the Ruwais plant in April after several fires broke out on the site following an aerial attack. While the company did not disclose details of the incident, media reports at the time linked it to a wave of Iranian drone attacks targeting oil and petrochemical facilities across the Gulf region.
