Japan conducts first Tomahawk missile test from Aegis destroyer

31 July 2026 11:01

Japan has successfully conducted its first test-firing of a U.S.-made Tomahawk cruise missile from one of its Aegis-equipped destroyers, marking a significant step in the country's efforts to strengthen its long-range defence capabilities.

According to Japanese media, the test took place on Tuesday (July 28) local time in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of the United States, Japan's Defence Ministry said.

The missile was launched from the Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyer Chokai.

The exercise forms part of Japan's wider defence build-up following the adoption of its 2022 National Security Strategy, which allows the country to acquire "counterstrike capabilities" to target enemy missile launch sites in self-defence, while remaining within the limits of its pacifist constitution.

The Chokai is expected to return to its home port in Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture, around September before being deployed to waters around Japan equipped with the Tomahawk missile system.

Japan's Defence Ministry said all eight of the country's Aegis-equipped destroyers will eventually be fitted with Tomahawk cruise missiles.
