Axios: Ukraine peace talks stall in Geneva over Russia’s position
Negotiations within the political working group on a Ukraine settlement have reached a deadlock during consultations in Geneva, Axios journalist Barak Ravid reported, citing two sources.
“Two sources with knowledge told me negotiations in the political group in Geneva got ‘stuck’ today,” Ravid wrote on X, attributing the impasse to positions presented by Russia’s new chief negotiator, Vladimir Medinsky.
One Axios source said Russian diplomats complained about recent public statements made by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. According to the source, Moscow believes Zelenskyy is not engaging in serious negotiations but is instead attempting to boost his domestic popularity ahead of possible elections.
Earlier, Zelenskyy stated that direct talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin are a key condition for progress on territorial issues. He added that he had instructed the Ukrainian delegation to seek an agreement on holding a personal meeting with Putin.
