Axios: US, Israel weigh military options as tensions with Iran escalate

18 February 2026 19:09

The Israeli government, which is advocating for a maximalist approach targeting both Iran’s nuclear and missile programs as well as regime change, is reportedly preparing for a potential military scenario within days, two Israeli officials said, Axios reports.

US sources suggested Washington might need more time before taking action. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) indicated that strikes could still be weeks away, though some advisers warn that the timeline could be shorter.

“The boss is getting fed up. Some people around him warn him against going to war with Iran, but I think there is 90% chance we see kinetic action in the next few weeks,” one adviser to Donald Trump said.

US officials noted after talks on February 17 that Iran must return with a detailed proposal within two weeks. Last June 19, the White House had set a similar two-week window for Trump to decide between continuing negotiations or taking military action; three days later, he launched Operation Midnight Hammer.

Despite ongoing discussions, there is currently no sign of an imminent diplomatic breakthrough with Tehran. Analysts and officials caution that evidence of potential military action is growing, signaling that conflict could be on the horizon.
