Azerbaijan emphasizes clean energy transition Ahead of COP29
Azerbaijan, the host of the upcoming 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, is prioritizing the transition from fossil fuels to clean energy sources.
Deputy Foreign Minister Elnur Mammadov highlighted the nation's commitment to this shift during a Dubrovnik Forum in Croatia, Caliber.Az reports per local media.
Mammadov noted that Azerbaijan has successfully attracted major investments in renewable energy from countries including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and UK.
Additionally, ongoing projects with the European Union aim to strengthen Azerbaijan's role as a reliable energy partner, aligning with the vision of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
A memorandum on strategic partnership between Azerbaijan and the EU, signed in July 2022, underscores this commitment. The memorandum outlines plans to double the capacity of the Southern Gas Corridor (SGC) from 12 billion cubic meters to 20 billion cubic meters by 2027 and emphasizes the transition to a green economy.
"As we prepare to host COP29 later this year, the transition from fossil fuels to clean energy sources remains crucial for us,"Mammadov underlined.
The 29th session of COP will take place in Baku this November, following the decision made at COP28 in Dubai on December 11, 2023.
