Azerbaijan, UNODC discuss cooperation on counterterrorism PHOTO

Azerbaijan’s Prosecutor General’s Office and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) have discussed expanding cooperation in the fight against terrorism, according to the Prosecutor General’s Office.

The discussions took place during a meeting between Prosecutor General Kamran Aliyev and Roberto Arbitrio, chief of UNODC’s Terrorism Prevention Branch.

The sides reviewed the results of their cooperation and prospects for further expansion. Aliyev highlighted the importance of Arbitrio’s visit to Azerbaijan to attend the fourth Baku Security Forum, taking place on September 21-23.

The meeting noted that the Prosecutor General’s Office and UNODC had implemented several joint initiatives in recent years, including those linked to COP29 and the Global Operational Network of Anti-Corruption Law Enforcement Authorities (GlobE Network).

The officials discussed practical cooperation in combating terrorism and its financing, links between terrorism and organised crime, protection of critical infrastructure, and countering the use of new technologies and virtual assets for terrorist purposes.

Aliyev also briefed Arbitrio on coordination with UNODC ahead of the 15th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi from September 26 to October 1.

The meeting also included an exchange of views on other issues of mutual interest.
