20 September 2026 15:59

Events marking September 20, State Sovereignty Day, were held across units, formations and military units of the Azerbaijani Army, as well as the Separate Combined Arms Army and specialized military educational institutions.

The events began with a minute of silence in memory of National Leader Heydar Aliyev and servicemen who died defending the homeland, followed by the national anthem of Azerbaijan, Caliber.Az reports citing the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry.

Participants were then conveyed a congratulatory message from Defense Minister Colonel General Zakir Hasanov addressed to the personnel of the Azerbaijani Army.

Speakers emphasized that state sovereignty is one of the fundamental foundations of any independent state. In this regard, pursuant to an order signed by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on September 19, 2024, September 20 is celebrated annually in Azerbaijan as State Sovereignty Day.

The events also highlighted that the ideas of National Leader Heydar Aliyev for Azerbaijan’s prosperous future are being successfully continued by his worthy successor, President and Supreme Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev.

Speakers further underscored the historical significance of the 2020 Patriotic War and subsequent operations aimed at restoring Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity in establishing lasting peace, stability and security in the South Caucasus.

Military personnel were also briefed on the significance of State Sovereignty Day as a symbol of the Azerbaijani people’s centuries-long struggle for independence, the restoration of constitutional order throughout the country and the strengthening of national unity.

As part of the commemorative events, Azerbaijani servicemen visited the graves of fallen servicemen, laid flowers and honored their memory.
