Azerbaijan hands over embezzlement convict to Georgian authorities
A Georgian citizen detained earlier this year in Azerbaijan has been extradited to his home country following a formal request from authorities of Georgia.
The individual, identified as Irakli Berdzenadze, born in 1987, was the subject of an international arrest warrant issued in 2019, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
He was convicted in absentia by the Tbilisi City Court on October 25, 2023, on charges of embezzlement and illegal entrepreneurial activity.
According to the Azerbaijani authorities, Berdzenadze was apprehended in February 2025 on Azerbaijani territory. Following standard legal procedures and the fulfilment of necessary conditions for extradition, the Azerbaijani Prosecutor General's Office approved Georgia’s request for his transfer.
The extradition was carried out with the assistance of a special convoy from the Penitentiary Service of Georgia’s Ministry of Justice, who took custody of Berdzenadze and ensured his secure handover to the competent Georgian authorities.
