Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan to forge strategic partnership in green energy

Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan are set to strengthen their strategic cooperation in the development and transfer of "green" energy.

This move is outlined in the draft law titled "On Approval of the Agreement between the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Republic of Kazakhstan, and the Republic of Uzbekistan on Strategic Partnership in the Field of Development and Transfer of Green Energy."

The draft law is scheduled for discussion at the Milli Majlis Committee on International Relations and Interparliamentary Ties meeting due on January 22, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

The Agreement on Strategic Partnership in the green energy sector was signed on November 13, 2024, during the COP29 climate summit in Baku. The three countries also signed a Memorandum of Understanding to further their collaboration in the development and transmission of green energy, marking a significant step toward a sustainable energy future.

According to the agreement, green energy generated will be transmitted across the Caspian Sea, with the project connecting to an energy cable leading to the Black Sea. This initiative follows the signing of a protocol in July 2024 in Astana, which set the stage for the creation of a Central Asia-Azerbaijan-Europe green energy corridor. In addition, a memorandum of cooperation for integrating energy systems was signed during an investment forum in Tashkent last year.

As part of its long-term plans, Uzbekistan aims to begin exporting surplus green electricity to Europe by 2030, using the energy transmission networks of Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan.
