Azerbaijan prevents major drug smuggling at border, detains trespasser PHOTO
The State Border Service of Azerbaijan has prevented the smuggling of 700 grams of opium and 13,616 psychotropic pills into the country, Caliber.Az reports citing the state service.
In addition, as a result of joint operational activities with the police department of the Yardimli district, a citizen of Azerbaijan, Nabi Zakir oglu Maharramov (born in 1984) from the Yevlakh district, was arrested while attempting to illegally cross the state border from Iran into Azerbaijan.
Investigative measures regarding the case are ongoing.
In December 2024, as part of a major operation against the illicit drug trade, the Azerbaijani authorities seized a total of 246 kilograms and 496 grams of various narcotic substances, along with 833 psychotropic pills.
Moreover, as part of its anti-smuggling measures, the State Border Service discovered and confiscated contraband valued at 2,2 million manats (roughly $1.3 million) including illegal medicines, alcoholic beverages, tobacco products, and ammunition.
