Azerbaijan's COP29 delegation active at UN General Assembly and climate week events
The delegation from the Azerbaijan Operating Company (AOC) COP29 is currently in New York to participate in the 79th session of the UN General Assembly and Climate Week.
During their visit, the AOC hosted a briefing on September 26 focused on organizational and operational preparations for COP29, which is due in Baku this November, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
Delegates from several UN member states attended the event, where key speakers included Narmin Jarchalova, Chairperson of the COP29 AOC Board; Wasim Mir, Director of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference Affairs Division; and Cecilia Kinutia-Njenga, Director of the UNFCCC Intergovernmental Support and Collective Progress Division. Members of the COP29 AOC Coordination Council, Shahla Abbakirova and Ismail Isayev, also contributed to the discussions.
The briefing addressed various topics of interest to the attending delegations.
COP29 will take place in Azerbaijan this November, a decision made during the COP28 plenary session in Dubai on December 11, 2023. Over two weeks, Baku is expected to host around 70,000 to 80,000 international attendees.
The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), established at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, aims to prevent harmful human interference with the climate system. The term COP stands for "Conference of the Parties," which is the principal decision-making body overseeing the implementation of the UNFCCC, consisting of 198 member states. COP meetings are typically held annually, with the first event occurring in Berlin in March 1995; the secretariat is based in Bonn.
