Azerbaijan, Syria discuss energy cooperation as leaders meet in Antalya PHOTO/UPDATED
President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev and President of Syria for the transitional period, Ahmed al-Sharaa, held talks in Antalya on 17 April, focusing on bilateral relations, regional developments, and energy cooperation, according to the Azerbaijani presidential website cited by Caliber.Az.
The meeting highlighted previous contacts between the two leaders, including discussions during al-Sharaa’s visit to Azerbaijan last year and their interaction at the 4th Antalya Diplomacy Forum. Both sides noted with satisfaction that, following recent political changes in Syria, practical steps are being taken to expand cooperation between Baku and Damascus.
A key topic of the talks was energy cooperation, with particular emphasis on the planned export of Azerbaijani natural gas to Syria via Türkiye. The sides underscored the strategic importance of the project, describing it as a potential contribution to Syria’s energy security and broader economic recovery.
During the meeting, Ahmed al-Sharaa expressed gratitude to President Ilham Aliyev for Azerbaijan’s support for Syria.
The two leaders also exchanged views on the future development of bilateral relations and other issues of mutual interest. They stressed the importance of high-level reciprocal visits and continued political dialogue to strengthen cooperation.
Regional tensions were also addressed, with both sides expressing concern over escalating instability and underlining the importance of resolving conflicts through diplomatic means.
At the conclusion of the meeting, President Aliyev invited Ahmed al-Sharaa to pay an official visit to Azerbaijan. The Syrian leader accepted the invitation.
