President Aliyev highlights key UK ties as new envoy presents credentials PHOTO
Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev on August 18 received newly appointed British Ambassador to Azerbaijan Duncan Norman, who presented his credentials to the head of state, with the meeting focusing on the development of bilateral strategic partnership and cooperation in key areas.
Beginning his remarks in Azerbaijani, Duncan Norman recalled his first visit to Azerbaijan 27 years ago and praised the country’s development, Caliber.Az reports via state media.
“Your Excellency, when my wife Kerry and I first came to Azerbaijan 27 years ago, we were deeply impressed by the warmth of the people and the great potential of Baku. Since then, Azerbaijan has undergone tremendous development. I am honored to open a new chapter in the relations between our countries,” the ambassador noted.
Stating that work on a new strategic partnership between the United Kingdom and Azerbaijan is underway, the ambassador emphasised that it would further advance the two countries’ achievements through deeper cooperation on shared priorities, strengthened security, and innovation.
The ambassador expressed the UK’s desire to build a dynamic partnership with Azerbaijan in renewable energy, defence, and aviation, while also highlighting educational ties and stronger links between younger generations.
He noted that the UK Government appreciates President Ilham Aliyev’s efforts to establish peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia and supports the progress achieved in this direction.
Duncan Norman also recalled that his country was the first international partner to support Azerbaijan’s demining efforts.
President Aliyev wished the ambassador a pleasant stay in Baku and highly praised him for speaking Azerbaijani.
The head of state said the issues on the agenda were important not only for bilateral relations but also for regional development and cooperation.
Expressing gratitude to the UK Government for its assistance with demining, President Ilham Aliyev said Azerbaijan needs closer international cooperation in this area.
Recalling that Azerbaijan-UK cooperation began in the energy sector 30 years ago, the president highlighted significant potential for partnership in renewable energy, noting that Azerbaijan’s first solar power plant was built by bp.
Noting that Azerbaijan has lived through only one year of peace in the 35 years since gaining independence, President Ilham Aliyev said this represents a major shift for the region.
He added that, given the situation in the region, security will remain a priority on Azerbaijan’s agenda.
The head of state also highlighted the favourable investment climate created in Azerbaijan and the strong mutual interest of Azerbaijani and British companies.
President Ilham Aliyev wished the ambassador success in his activities.
