Azerbaijan's Shamakhi hosts second UNFCCC climate retreat
Heads of Delegation from United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) negotiating groups and selected Parties convened for the second Shamakhi Climate Retreat to engage in a constructive and forward-looking exchange in an informal setting.
The announcement was shared by COP29 Azerbaijan on X page, Caliber.Az reports.
According to a statement published by COP29, the retreat “serves as a valuable space for mutual listening, trust-building, and fostering a deeper understanding of diverse expectations.”
The first Shamakhi retreat was held earlier in 2025, marking Azerbaijan’s proactive role as COP29 host in facilitating early consensus-building. Informal settings such as these allow delegates to explore contentious issues, align positions, and build trust — all essential ingredients for a successful outcome at the formal summit.
COP29 is viewed as a critical milestone in the global climate process, particularly as countries are expected to advance discussions on the New Collective Quantified Goal on climate finance, strengthen adaptation frameworks, and assess progress on emissions reduction in line with the Global Stocktake outcomes from COP28.
