Azerbaijan’s tallest suspension bridge nears completion on key highway VIDEO / DETAILS

13 May 2025 13:01

Spokesman for the State Agency of Azerbaijan Automobile Roads Anar Najafli has announced that construction of Azerbaijan’s highest suspension bridge is nearing completion on the Muganli–Ismayilli–Gabala highway, marking a major milestone in the country’s infrastructure development.

“Located at the 4.5-kilometre point of the key roadway, the new bridge spans the Agsuchay River and is set to become the tallest suspension bridge in both Azerbaijan and the Caucasus region,” Najafli told Caliber.Az.

He noted that the four-span bridge stretches 1,135 meters in length and 23 meters in width. Rising 76.5 meters above the riverbed, the bridge is supported by towers reaching 142 meters in height.

“Construction work on nine of the bridge’s supports is fully completed, while final touches are being made on the remaining four,” Najafli said.

He noted that the bridge is being built under a special directive from the President of Azerbaijan and will significantly enhance regional connectivity. Once operational, the structure will reduce the total length of the Muganli–Ismayilli–Gabala road by 9.7 kilometres, bringing it down to 76.8 kilometres. In addition to its scale, the bridge is designed to withstand powerful seismic activity, capable of enduring earthquakes up to magnitude 9.

Authorities say the project will not only improve transportation efficiency but also support regional economic growth, particularly in the tourism and agricultural sectors.
