Azerbaijan sentences MP assassination attempt suspects
The trial over Emin Aliyarov, Rashad Ahmadov, Azer Sarijanov, Elshad Asgarov, and Sabuhi Shirinov, who were detained in connection with the attempted assassination of MP Fazil Mustafa, has concluded in Azerbaijan.
The Baku Grave Crimes Court has delivered its verdict, Caliber.Az reports citing the local media.
Sarijanov has been sentenced to life imprisonment, Ahmadov to 19 years, Shirnov to 20 years, Asgarov to 18 years, and Aliyarov to four years in prison.
The suspects were apprehended and brought to trial as a result of operations conducted by the Interior Ministry and the State Security Service.
The Main Investigative Department of the Azerbaijani State Security Service initiated a criminal case under Article 277 (attempted assassination of a state or public figure with the intent to end the official or political activity or to avenge the activity) and Article 228.2.1 (illegal acquisition, possession, transportation, and carrying of firearms, their components, and ammunition by a group of individuals in premeditation) of the Azerbaijani Criminal Code.
