Azerbaijan, Singapore collaborate on shared goals ahead of COP29

11 October 2024 16:01

The President-designate of COP29, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Mukhtar Babayev, recently held discussions with Singapore's Minister of Sustainable Development and Environment, Grace Foo Hai Yen.

The meeting focused on aligning common goals and reviewing the progress of negotiations in anticipation of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), set to take place in Baku, Caliber.Az reports citing COP29's post on social platform X.

On October 9, the COP29 Presidency announced the appointment of ministerial representatives for adaptation, mitigation, and Article 6 of the Paris Agreement under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. Grace Fu Hai Yen and Simon Watts, New Zealand's Minister of Climate Change, have been designated as the Ministerial Pair for Article 6. This pair will oversee political consultations on the article and work to build momentum for its finalization at COP29.

This November, Azerbaijan will proudly host COP29, following the decision made during the COP28 plenary meeting in Dubai on December 11 of last year. Baku is expected to become a global hub for climate discussions, welcoming approximately 70,000 to 80,000 international guests.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, established at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, aims to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. The Conference of the Parties (COP) serves as the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of this framework, with 198 countries as parties to the Convention. Unless agreed otherwise, COP meetings are held annually, with the first event taking place in March 1995 in Berlin, Germany, where the secretariat is based in Bonn.
