Azerbaijan, Thailand sharing experience in humanitarian demining

A delegation headed by Representative of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan on special assignments Elchin Amirbayov is currently on a working visit to Southeast Asia.

The purpose of the visit is to expand cooperation and exchange expertise with international organisations specialising in mine threat mitigation. The delegation includes representatives from the Mine Action Agency of the Azerbaijan Republic (ANAMA), ANAMA told Caliber.Az.

The delegation held a meeting at the Thailand Mine Action Centre, where potential cooperation was discussed. During the visit, the Azerbaijani delegation met with Director General of the Thailand Mine Action Centre, Lt.Gen. Nattawut Sabyeroop.

The meeting focused on sharing experience in humanitarian demining, discussing joint training programmes, innovative approaches in mine clearance operations, and issues related to enhancing capacity and technical assistance.

The Mine Action Agency of the Azerbaijan Republic (ANAMA) was established on July 18, 1998. It commenced its operations within the framework of the Joint Programme on Mine Action in Azerbaijan, between the Government of Azerbaijan and UNDP on April 2, 1999.

ANAMA became responsible for the clearance of mines, unexploded ordnance, and other explosive residues (except for chemical weapons) found in the territories freed from occupation, as well as other areas affected by war and military operations, including but not limited to performing temporary storage, transportation, neutralization, as well as organization of other necessary activities, planning, coordination and management of activities.

At the same time, ANAMA is the main executive body for the coordination and management of the demining activities carried out within the country.
