Azerbaijan to rebury remains of four servicemen on September 12
The Azerbaijani State Commission on Prisoners of War, Hostages, and Missing Persons has announced the schedule and locations for burial ceremonies of individuals previously considered missing, whose remains were recently recovered during excavation work in the liberated territories.
The Commission told Caliber.Az that the remains of four servicemen will be reburied on September 12:
• Murad Valiyev — cemetery in the village of Nutah, Guba District
• Jalal Abdullayev — settlement of Gobustan, Garadag District, Baku
• Ayaz Zarbaliyev — Alley of Martyrs, Goychay city
• Vakil Gayibov — cemetery in the village of Gamervan, Gabala District
Azerbaijan's quest to locate and identify missing persons has intensified since the 2020 victory, which ended a 27-year Armenian occupation of about 20% of its territory.
During these years, significant progress was made in locating and identifying remains. For instance, as of August 2025, 28 mass graves have been discovered in the territories liberated from occupation, resulting in the exhumation of 218 bodies. Through anatomical and molecular-genetic examinations, the identities of 60 individuals have been established, and their remains returned to their families.
In total, since the First Karabakh War in the early 1990s, the Commission has registered 3,890 missing persons, with 3,171 being military personnel
