Azerbaijani border guards prevent narcotic smuggling attempt, confiscate 13 kg of drugs
On May 24, at 11:55 am, border guards at the service area of "Goytepe" border guard detachment of Azerbaijan State Border Guard Service, thwarted the smuggling of drugs by Shirbekov Shamo Faig oglu and Shirbekov Ilyas Rahib oglu, residents of Zevin village of Yardimli region.
The State Security Service told Caliber.Az that as a result of the operational activities, 13 kg of drugs (11 kg of marijuana and 2 kg of methamphetamine) were seized.
Investigative actions are still underway.
The majority of drugs smuggled into Azerbaijan arrive in the country from Iran. Drug supply measures are mainly connected with the activities of law-enforcement agencies in the fight against the illicit trafficking of drugs.
According to Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry's research, the following major drug trafficking routes that traverse the territory of Azerbaijan have been identified:
- Afghanistan - Iran - Azerbaijan - Europe;
- Afghanistan - Turkmenistan - Azerbaijan - Europe.
