An Azerbaijani demining officer and his specially trained dog have been recognised as the best mine-detection team of 2025 by the Marshall Legacy Institute, one of the United States’ leading humanitarian demining NGOs.
Vusal Allahverdiyev of the Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA) and his dog, Ben-Mace, were honoured at a ceremony held at the Azerbaijani Embassy in Washington, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
The event brought together representatives from the Marshall Legacy Institute, ANAMA colleagues, including Rahman Askerov, and officials from supporting organisations involved in humanitarian mine clearance.
During the event, attendees observed a live demonstration in which Ben-Mace located and neutralised a simulated mine, highlighting the critical role of canine units in mine detection.
Speakers emphasised the persistent threat posed by landmines in Azerbaijan and called for continued international support to tackle the issue.
The award will be formally presented at the Institute’s annual gala in Washington later this year.
