Azerbaijani flag flies high in Chicago on occasion of Independence Restoration Day
The State Flag of Azerbaijan was raised in the American city of Chicago on the occasion of 18 October - the Day of Restoration of Independence.
The flag-raising ceremony held at The Daley Center, the city's administrative and public centre, was organized by co-founders of the Azerbaijan Center for Midwestern States (ACMA), operating in Illinois, Farid Mammadov and Mehriban Mammadova, Caliber.Az reports, citing the State Committee for Diaspora Relations of Azerbaijan.
The tricolour flag of Azerbaijan was raised to the sounds of the National Anthem of Azerbaijan. The flag-raising ceremony attracted attention of citizens. Those interested in the action were provided with information about Azerbaijan.
Notably, Azerbaijan celebrates the Day of Restoration of Independence on October 18.
It has been 33 years since Azerbaijan restored its independence on October 18, 1991, with the Constitutional Act of State Independence of Azerbaijan – an event that ended more than seven decades of Soviet rule.
The occasion has been celebrated as Independence Day for 29 years since 1991. However, President Ilham Aliyev signed a decree on October 15, 2021, to rename it for the Day of Restoration of Independence.
For the second time since 1991, the people of Azerbaijan celebrate this holiday in a completely different way, as a victorious nation that has restored its territorial integrity.
