Azerbaijani MP urges France to avoid its arrogant policy towards other states At anti-colonialism event in Baku

21 January 2025 12:05

Azerbaijani Parliament member Tural Ganjaliyev has called on France to avoid its arrogant policy towards other states, citing the country’s continuing colonial policy.

Addressing the ongoing international conference in Baku titled “Independence of Réunion: A look at France's Colonial Heritage and The Path to Sovereignty,” Ganjaliyev said Azerbaijan is fighting against the colonial policy of France, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.

“We oppose France's colonial policy. France should also stop its arrogant policy towards other states.”

Meanwhile, Azer Allahveranov, another Azerbaijani MP attending the conference, stated that the fight against colonialism should be conducted globally.

He stated that Azerbaijan is combating colonialism in accordance with international law.

"Those who claim that Azerbaijan is interfering in the internal affairs of France should be asked: since when has colonialism been an internal affair of this country? This is a problem for all of humanity. And those who claim that Azerbaijan is crossing the "red line" should be reminded that our country is fighting colonialism within the framework of international law," he noted.

Notably, recent years have seen Azerbaijan actively engage in anti-colonial rhetoric, particularly targeting France.

In July 2024, President Ilham Aliyev pledged support for the independence movements of France's overseas territories, including New Caledonia and Corsica. He accused France of colonialism and expressed Azerbaijan's commitment to assisting these territories in their pursuit of independence.

Further supporting these efforts is the Baku Initiative Group (BIG), an Azerbaijani organization dedicated to combatting colonialism. Established with the mission to promote decolonization and the rights of oppressed peoples, BIG works within international legal frameworks and avoids interference in the internal affairs of any state.

The Group has organized several international conferences and initiatives, including events at the United Nations and various global locations, all advocating for freedom and independence for colonized peoples.

In addition to its decolonization efforts, BIG also focuses on issues such as human rights, women’s empowerment, and environmental and cultural advocacy, demonstrating a comprehensive approach to promoting social justice on the global stage.
