Azerbaijani oil, gas firm pioneers AI-driven seismic processing in US PHOTO
Azerbaijani-based GL Group has become the first oil and gas company in its region to implement post-stack seismic data processing technology using artificial intelligence (AI) at onshore fields, the company announced at the International Meeting for Applied Geoscience and Energy (IMAGE 2025), held in Houston, US.
IMAGE 2025 is the world’s largest annual forum for geoscience and energy professionals. The event, jointly organised by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG), the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), and the Society for Sedimentary Geology (SEPM), drew over 7,800 participants, more than 1,100 technical presentations, around 260 exhibitors, and representatives from 93 countries. Among numerous global companies, GL Group was selected to share its experience in integrating AI into seismic data processing, Caliber.Az reports per local media.
Kanan Aliyev, Director of Reservoir Management, and Leyla Ismayilova, Petrophysicist at GL Group, presented the company’s work at the Kursangi and Garabaghli fields in Azerbaijan’s Salyan region, operated by Salyan Oil Limited, an affiliate of GL Group.
“Integrating artificial intelligence into our seismic workflows has enabled us to identify new development opportunities at fields long considered fully explored. This marks a significant step forward in enhancing the efficiency of mature field development,” Aliyev said.
The project was executed in partnership with Waverity, a company specialising in AI-driven seismic processing. By applying advanced algorithms, the team significantly improved the quality of existing seismic data, revealing deeper and previously unexplored zones beyond the reach of traditional methods.
“These outcomes strongly support our commitment to high-tech and digital solutions in operations. GL Group continuously deploys the latest technologies, engages top experts, and attracts high-caliber talent to drive innovation across our projects," Asif Zeynalov, CEO and Chairman of GL Group’s Advisory Board said.
In addition to the presentation, GL Group participated in a technical poster session showcasing its ongoing research and field development initiatives.
GL Group operates five oil and gas fields in Azerbaijan, including Kursangi and Garabaghli in the Salyan region, and Buzovna-Mashtaga, Gala, and Zyria on the Absheron Peninsula. Its portfolio includes operating companies such as Salyan Oil Limited, Taghiyev Operating Company, and GL Technical Services LLC. In 2024, GL Group expanded internationally by acquiring a 25% stake in Canadian Gazelle Energy Limited’s gas license in Türkiye’s Thrace Basin.
