Azerbaijani police seize over 10 kilograms of drugs on border with Iran
The Azerbaijani State Border Service has seized over 10 kg of drugs on the state border with neighbouring Iran.
On May 22, at 22:00 hours, border guards in the service area of the Lankaran border detachment found and seized 10 kg 470 g of narcotic drugs (9 kg 955 g of marijuana, 515 g of heroin), Caliber.Az report per the service's official website.
Operational-investigative measures are underway.
The majority of drugs smuggled into Azerbaijan arrive in the country from Iran. Drug supply measures are mainly connected with the activities of law-enforcement agencies in the fight against the illicit trafficking of drugs.
According to Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry's research, the following major drug trafficking routes that traverse the territory of Azerbaijan have been identified:
- Afghanistan - Iran - Azerbaijan - Europe;
- Afghanistan - Turkmenistan - Azerbaijan - Europe.
