Bahrain flags Iranian strikes as violations of human rights, international law

Bahrain has accused Iran of carrying out missile attacks against its territory, describing them as a violation of sovereignty and a threat to civilian lives, during remarks delivered at the United Nations Human Rights Council, BNA reports.

Speaking during the general debate under Item Two of the council’s 61st session in Geneva, Bahrain’s Permanent Representative to the UN Office and other international organizations in Geneva, Abdullah Abdullatif Abdullah, said the kingdom had been targeted by what he described as “treacherous” missile attacks.

“The Kingdom of Bahrain, which has always upheld the principles of security, peace, and peaceful coexistence, has been subjected to treacherous Iranian missile attacks targeting civilians and civilian objects in several areas within the Kingdom,” the ambassador said.

He added that the attacks “constitute a blatant violation of Bahrain’s sovereignty, security, and stability, and an unjustified threat to the safety, security, and lives of civilians on its territory,” and reflect “a disregard for all international laws and norms, as well as the principles of good neighbourliness.”

The Bahraini diplomat also condemned attacks that he said had targeted several other countries in the region.

“The Permanent Representative also expressed the Kingdom’s condemnation of the Iranian attacks against the United Arab Emirates, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Sultanate of Oman, the State of Qatar, the State of Kuwait, and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan,” he said.

According to the ambassador, the Bahrain Defence Force responded to the attacks through its air defence systems.

“He noted that the air defence systems of the Bahrain Defence Force have responded to the hostile attacks with great efficiency and capability, and continue to carry out their national duty in confronting any threat targeting the security, stability, and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Bahrain and all those residing within it,” the statement said.

Abdullah added that civil defence authorities, medical services, and other institutions were working to provide support and ensure public safety.

Calling for international action, he said the global community must respond decisively.

“The time has come for the international community to assume its responsibilities—not only to condemn this treacherous and reprehensible attack, but also to take an immediate and decisive stance to halt these hostile acts, which constitute a serious act of aggression, threaten the fundamental human right to life, and flagrantly violate international human rights law and international humanitarian law,” he said.
