Baku hosts first meeting of special working group on Caspian Sea
The Azerbaijani Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources has announced that the first meeting of a special working group created within the Framework Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea is being held in Azerbaijan’s capital Baku.
Head of the Environmental Policy Division of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources Faig Mutallimov has said that representatives of the foreign ministries and ministries of environment of the Caspian littoral countries, as well as representatives of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Europe Office, which serves as the secretariat of the Convention, are taking part in the meeting organised at the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources told Report.
“Azerbaijan chairs the Conference of the Parties to the Convention. Negotiations are underway to agree on institutional mechanisms for the location of the Secretariat of the Convention in the region. Experts are preparing the necessary documents,” Mutallimov said.
The decision to create a special working group on the Caspian Sea was made at a meeting of the environment ministers of the Caspian littoral countries in Geneva, Switzerland in September 2023.
